Algae and Moss
Algae
-More than 300 species of algae have been found in Antarctica without being in water.
-Blue-green and other algae are found growing in damp sand and gravel around lakes and tarns.
-Others –the snow algae -
May form extensive and spectacular red, yellow or green patches in areas of permanent snow.
-Recent studies have shown that some blue-green algae live inside rocks in dry valleys.
-Algae come in different colours and areas.
Moss
-There are a small number of mosses in Antarctica.
-Mosses are attracted to wet and sheltered.
-Mosses are similar to lichens because they gather in colonies to collect and retain rainwater.
